Is This Actually a Dental Emergency?
Not every toothache requires an after-hours call, but some situations absolutely do. If your child is experiencing any of the following, contact us right away:
- A knocked-out or partially dislodged tooth
- Severe or worsening tooth pain
- Swelling in the gums, jaw, or face
- Bleeding that won’t stop after several minutes
- A tooth that looks visibly cracked, dark, or broken
- Signs of infection, such as pus or a bad taste in the mouth
When in doubt, call. It’s always better to have one of our pediatric dentists walk you through the situation than to wait and find out the problem could have been treated sooner.
What to Do Before You Come In
Staying calm is the most important thing you can do in the first few minutes after a dental injury. Kids read your energy, and a steady, reassuring presence helps keep them from panicking.
Here are a few quick steps depending on the situation:
- Knocked-out tooth: Don’t scrub it. Place it in a cup of milk or have your child hold it gently in their mouth (if they’re old enough not to swallow it) and head to our office immediately.
- Broken tooth: Rinse the area with warm water and apply a cold compress to reduce swelling. Save any large pieces if you can.
- Bleeding: Use a clean cloth or gauze and apply gentle pressure. If bleeding doesn’t slow after ten minutes, that’s urgent.
- Swelling or pain: A cold compress on the outside of the cheek can help while you make your way to us.
Never attempt to reposition a tooth or piece of tooth on your own. Call us first so we can guide you through what to do before your visit.
H2: What Happens at an Emergency Pediatric Dentist in Bellevue
When you arrive at our office, you won’t be navigating the situation alone. Our team will get your child seen quickly. One of our doctors, Dr. Jenny Lee, Dr. Sapna Saini, or Dr. Ashley Huynh, will assess the situation and explain what they’re seeing in plain language before anything happens.
Emergency visits typically include:
- A visual exam and, when needed, diagnostic imaging to get a full picture
- Pain relief appropriate for your child’s age
- Treatment such as a filling, smoothing a sharp edge, addressing an infection, or, when necessary, an extraction
- Clear home care instructions before you leave
Parents stay with their children throughout the entire visit. We keep the process as smooth and calm as possible because we know an unfamiliar dental office is already a lot for a child to handle, especially when they’re in pain.
Children with Special Needs
We also provide emergency care for children with special needs. Our special needs dentistry approach means our team is experienced in adapting care to meet your child exactly where they are, with patience and the right techniques to keep them comfortable.
Building Better Habits to Prevent Future Emergencies
Not every accident is preventable, but many dental injuries and urgent situations are avoidable with a few consistent habits. Sports mouthguards are one of the most effective ways to protect teeth during physical activity. Discouraging habits like chewing on ice, pen caps, or hard candy also go a long way.
Regular checkups are equally important. Catching a weak tooth, early decay, or bite issues before they become painful saves a lot of stress down the line. If your child hasn’t had their first visit or is overdue for a cleaning, that’s a good place to start.
For families interested in orthodontic care, visiting specialists from Sound Orthodontics, Dr. Asher Chiu, Dr. Kortne Frederick Hou, and Dr. Jack Hou, are in our office every few weeks to provide Invisalign evaluations and consultations. Getting ahead of bite and alignment issues early can prevent complications that lead to emergencies later.
